Bairnsdale is the region's major commerce hub and regional service centre. As such it offers employment opportunities across a range of industries and within government, professional and personal service sectors.
Bairnsdale also has a strong retail centre. Bairnsdale's largest single employer is the Bairnsdale Regional Health Service followed by Patties Foods Ltd.
Other significant towns include Orbost, which acts as the service centre for the eastern section of the region, Omeo servicing the Alpine areas, Lakes Entrance, Metung, Mallacoota and Paynesville – proving a range of retail, tourism, fishing and professional service opportunities.
